Meeting Scholarship Needs - Support the WCC Scholarship Fund
Nearly one-third of WCC's students receive some form of financial aid. The current annual tuition of $1,344 will rise to $2,328 by 2011-2012. Our financial aid officer estimates that an additional 20 students would be in need of partial scholarships of $1,000 to help offset the expense of a higher education.
Hawai‘i is in critical need of health-care professionals - Support the WCC Human Anatomy and Physiology Fund
Drs. Ed Bernauer and Ross Langston are presently teaching undergraduate courses in human anatomy and physiology. These required courses, for anyone entering the health care field, have been filled to capacity since inception. Rather than learn from DVDs or books, equipment is needed for hands-on experience. This adds a level of excellence in teaching only made possible by philanthropic support.
Engaging students with the environment and ensuring a sustainable future Hawai‘i - Support the Pacific Center for Environmental Studies (PaCES) Fund
WCC professors Dave Krupp and Floyd McCoy believe the environmental sciences hold the key to the sustainability of our island state. The goals of the PaCES program are: (1) create new programs and opportunities for college-level students in all aspects of environmental sciences education and research; (2) bring a variety of existing college projects emphasizing environmental science into one coordinated program; and (3) encourage partnerships involving participants from the following sectors of environmental studies: K-12 education, higher education, research, business, and the community. We seek to raise $100,000 annually for PaCES. In addition, we seek corporate sponsorships to partially fund the summer high school program.
A Library for Students and the entire Windward Community - Support the WCC Library
Peeling paint, a leaky roof and cramped conditions characterize the WCC library built in the 1930s. Imagine a library resource center for students with ample access to computers and reference materials that can also welcome and encourage use by the entire community. The State is poised to build such a facility. Even so, private support is needed for expansion of the Hawaiian and rare book collection, media and database acquisitions and community outreach.
Preserving Our Hawaiian Culture and History - Support Hawaiian Studies at WCC
Preserving our Hawaiian culture, language and history, and passing it to succeeding generations is the ambitious goal of the Hawaiian Studies department. Private support is needed for scholarships, rare Polynesian books and maps, and study abroad.
Preserve and Perpetuate Hawai‘i’s Hawaiian Music – Support WCC’s Hawai‘i Music Institute (HMI)
HMI seeks to teach and preserve the many facets of our Hawaiian music culture: writing poetry for songs, making instruments, learning to play ‘ukulele and slack-key guitar, the ins-and-outs of the recording studio, and the business knowledge required to be successful in the Hawaiian entertainment industry. Gifts to HMI support student scholarships (both undergraduate and high school) and expenses related to hiring industry leaders to teach and share their knowledge.
Golf Course Maintenance, Plant Disease & Pest Control, Landscaping, Soils Technology - Support WCC’s Agriculture Technology Program
Did you know that WCC offers the only turf grass management course on the island of O‘ahu? WCC offers courses in plant irrigation, plant disease and pest control, landscape equipment and maintenance, plant propagation, soils technology and others. Training students on equipment at industry standards remains an ongoing challenge. Our current equipment is aging and in need of replacement.
Student Theatre Training and Community Resource - Support Paliku Theatre or the Paliku Theatre Endowment
Paliku Theatre provides theatrical training to WCC students and the community: from acting to directing, from lighting design to set building, from the technical booth to the box office. The general public has enjoyed a wide range of musicals, plays and cultural events these past five years. Because Paliku Theatre strives to offer theatrical entertainment and cultural events at affordable ticket prices, it relies on gifts of support from private and corporate donors. Naming of interior spaces of Paliku Theatre is currently available.
12,000 K-12 School Students Connect with Science and Higher Education at WCC Annually - Support the Center for Aerospace Education
Newspapers often report that fewer and fewer students in the United States study science. Every year Professor Joe Ciotti engages 12,000 K-12 school children with the excitement of science via the Hokulani Imaginarium, NASA Flight Training Center, and the Aerospace Exploration Lab. Lanihuli Observatory allows students to view sunspots via a solar telescope, see planets and stars at night via an optical telescope, and observe Jupiter and the sun via a radio telescope. We want our student visitors to get that “WOW!” factor and the inspiration to explore a career in science and technology. The CAE supports WCC’s credit program in astronomy and space science, the Hawaii Space Grant program and K-12 community outreach.
Unique Campus Needs - Support the WCC Advancement Fund
The WCC Advancement Fund is the only fund available to the Chancellor for special needs that arise, such as the camera that was needed for art documentation at Gallery Iolani, or covering the cost to send several honors students to seminars, or even new robes for the choir. Your support of this fund is critical for the advancement of WCC’s students and faculty.
