Doing Well in ANTH 150: Advice from Students
In Class
- Paying close
attention to everything the instructor says. There’s nothing on the test that
was not covered in lecture.
- Come to class
everyday, keep up with the readings, and ask questions if you don’t understand
something.
- Take notes of
the slides.
- Take notes in
class, and come to class and listen to the lectures given. Many of the lectures
cover what’s on the test.
- Listen in class.
She uses most of her questions from the lecture.
- The best thing
to do I think is to take notes and use hints to remind you what to study and to
remember it better.
- Show up EVERY
day to class! Be sure to write down everything in each PowerPoint and put notes
to clarify for yourself.
- Download the
slides from class and match them to my notes. Combine the knowledge survey and
notes/slides. And study.
- Come to class –
Be present. Always be well rested.
- I try to fully
pay attention, attend every class, take as many notes as possible.
- Ask questions.
Come to class with an open mind.
- Attend class.
Listen in class. When the teacher hints that something is important, most
likely it will be on the test.
- What helped was
studying the knowledge survey. That helped me the most.
- Ask plenty of
questions, even if they are way out there (but still having to do with
anthropology). Also read the chapters ahead of time.
- I will take more
notes in class and review my knowledge survey.
- All you gotta do
is read the material, pay attention in class, and be breezy!
- I missed so much
class…advice: go to class and pay attention! :D
Knowledge Survey
- Pay attention,
and also go over every question on the knowledge survey which is used as a
study guide.
- Print out the
knowledge survey and periodically refer back to it, especially when you move on
to the next chapter.
- Answer all the
questions on knowledge survey and study before the test. All test questions
were on the knowledge survey.
- I scored pretty
good because the way I studied was by using the knowledge survey. I took really
good notes and between that and the book I was able to pick out key things to
focus on getting in my head.
- The knowledge
survey is a great study guide for tests.
- Go over the
knowledge survey and make sure you understand and can explain everything on it.
- Use the
knowledge survey! Try to answer the questions as you go along with the readings
& then use it as a study guide! Draw diagrams to help you “see a picture”
of concepts where it will help (punnett squares, genetic drift).
- I went through
each question on the questionnaire and made a study guide which made it easier
to focus on the important information and to study in general (seems tedious, but
it’s thorough).
Organization
- Make sure to be
organized and know when the test is going to be taken. Also make sure to study.
- Make an hour or
so a week to dedicate to reviewing notes and rereading passages that confused
you.
- Stay on track.
Keep up with the reading. Keep up with the homework. Pay attention in class.
- To do well in
this class you need to just keep up with all the readings and reading prep
forms, which never take too long to do. Studying and taking notes is also key,
considering most of the test is multiple choice and short answer.
- Study ALL notes
and slides and read Ishmael at least a couple days before exams!
Reading
- Something that
works really well for me is to highlight key points and main ideas in
textbooks, articles, and especially in Ishmael.
- Always be
prepared for your tests by studying and reading everyday.
- Read all
chapters that are assigned and take notes. Also, go over the survey (study
guide) and answer all the questions on it.
- Take a lot of
notes in class and from the book. Use the knowledge survey in addition to
notes.
- Skim through the
chapter a few times before the test for a quick review. When you’re reading the
chapter, really think about what you’re reading. Question it so that you can
get interested in it. It’s easier to learn if you like what it is you’re
learning. Don’t memorize: Try to understand it.
- Read, read,
read!!
- Remember to read
when supposed to and study with a friend for the test.
- Read (required
text and Ishmael) meticulously to
understand
- Quickly
rereading the text would have been the most help. Know your vocab terms and
rereading all texts would be the most help.
- Reading the
books really help you understand the concepts.
- Asking for help
- Study before the
exams and if you don’t understand, don’t be scared to ask for help.
General Studying
- Think of links
to anthropology outside of class (It helps to understand concepts).
- Really
understand being nonethnocentric.
- Study more
throughout the week.
- I used index
cards to study and I felt like I knew my information but got kinda confused
with similar definitions. So know your similar definitions like ex: phenotype,
genotype.
- I think the next
time I will study more before the test and get a better night’s sleep.
- During the first
couple weeks, the best advice is to attend class, take good notes, keep up with
all the readings and the studying early.
- I just take
notes and re-write the information I don’t’ know. For me, re-writing the things
I don’t know enables me to remember it better.
