Windward Community College has recently received approval to plan the development of an Associate in Arts Degree in Ocean Recreation and Safety. This idea was born from the interest in WCC's credit and non-credit classes in Polynesian voyaging, surf science, and ocean safety. Unfortunately, the process of program approval has stalled recently. But we hope to have this program in full operation beginning Fall 2006. In entertaining this idea, WCC and its partners solicited input from industry representatives in November 2002. A presentation was made to the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents in April 2003. A tentative curriculum has been developed and the Ocean Recreation Committee hopes to present a full curriculum to the WCC Curriculum and Academic Affairs Committee during Spring 2006.
