PaCES-HIMB Summer Environmental Science Program for High School Juniors and Seniors
15 June  - 25 July 2009

An integrated ecosystems (ahupua'a) approach will be undertaken by examining a watershed from ridge to reef. Students will receive instruction and training in the following areas:

    • Water Quality Analyses
    • Soil and Aquatic Sediment Analyses
    • Beach Profiling
    • Ocean Current Mapping
    • Stream Dynamics
    • Stream Flora and Fauna
    • Aquatic Microbiology
    • Coral Reef Resource Assessment
    • Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    • Remote Sensing (RS)
    • Resource Management Practices
    • Water Safety, First Aid, & CPR

In addition, students will learn about how humans have interacted with and impacted the Hawaiian environment from traditional Hawaiian resource utilization practices (resource gathering, loi, fishponds, etc.) to modern activities (farming, urbanization, polluted runoff, stream hardening, etc.).

Students participating in this program and completing its activities will receive college credits (four credits) as BIOL 124/124L (tuition waived).

Participating students will also receive a $600 scholarship.

The target is Windward area schools from Waimanalo to Kahuku for this program (however, students from other areas will also be considered). The interest lies in students who have the greatest potential for benefiting from participation in this program. Students exhibiting high interest and enthusiasm for the environment, even those who have exhibited low to moderate academic achievement while in high school, are encouraged to participate.

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

The application deadline will be February 20, 2009. Announcements regarding acceptances will be made beginning March 27, 2009.
