Hail to the blooming Lehua Mamo, the yellow flower of the ‘ōhiʻa lehua tree.

ʻOhia is a culturally significant flowering evergreen tree endemic to Hawaiʻi. These iconic trees are seriously threatened by Rapid ʻŌhi’a Death (ROD), and also threaten some endemic birds and insects who rely on ‘ōhia forests.

This ʻōhiʻa lehua mamo is located behind Hale Kuhina on the Kailua end of campus.

Today the butterfly is attracted to the flower. Enjoy!

It was a busy weekend!
Ke Kulanui Kaiāulu o ke Koʻolau ma Ola Ka ʻĪ 💚
To kick off Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi some of our Kulanui ‘ohana attended Ola Ka ʻĪ to highlight our amazing Hawai’iloa program and Hawaiian Studies department on campus including, Limu Research, Ao Kahi, and Kalai Lāʻau!

Mahalo nui to @ohana_kulaniakea for sharing space with us and allowing us to be a part of Ola Ka ʻĪ ✨
Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, or Hawaiian language month, is an important celebration in Hawaiʻi that aims to revitalize, honor, and preserve the Hawaiian language and its cultural significance. To honor and perpetuate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi we will be participating CAMPUSWIDE through The ʻŌlelo Initiative. The ʻŌlelo initiative is meant to break barriers and access to language by showcasing hua ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian words) around campus.

Throughout the month of Pepeluali (February) we aim to increase the use of everyday hua ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. Students are urged to participate by finding these words around campus and posting it on social media tagging @wcchawaiiloa or emailing Mahie their pictures. (More info in the flyers).

In honor of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language month) as people of Hawaiʻi, kamaʻāina, and kanaka we, ʻAʻa i ka ʻōlelo! Dare to speak Hawaiian!

How can YOU participate?
Read the hua ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi you see. Mai hilahila! (no shame!) This is a judgement free zone and The ʻŌlelo Initiative is meant to subside that hilahila you may feel. Give it a read and try to use it in your everyday!
