Heeia Stream Water Quality Monitoring Home Page

Monitoring the water quality of He’eia Stream has been the subject of several independent study projects for WCC students under the guidance and tutelage of Dr. Dave Krupp.

Participating students have learned:

  • Field sampling techniques

  • Operation & maintenance of field instruments & equipment

  • Operation of laboratory instruments & equipment

  • GPS & GIS

  • Database creation

  • Data entry & analysis

  • An interdisciplinary (chemical, biological, physical, geological, ecological, social, etc.) approach to understanding water quality.

  • Recognition of non-point source pollution contributors

  • The Ahupua’a (from the mountains to the ocean) approach to natural resource management as a means of improving water quality in our streams & ocean.

  • The importance of community education & awareness as a key element in improving water quality.

  • Identification of endemic, indigenous and alien species encountered in & around the stream.

For this project period, June 2001 through March 2002, students measured several physical characteristics of Heeia Stream: Temperature (air & water), Conductivity, Salinity, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen Concentration, Velocity, Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Total Solids, Suspended Solids, and Dissolved Solids.
