Heeia Stream Water Quality MonitoringSite 3: Alaloa Street Bridge |
|
Our third sampling site is located at the Alaloa Street bridge. It is an
exposed, concrete-lined channel with islands of vegetation in a heavily
populated residential area. The vegetation in the channel is predominantly
alien and provides little to no shade for the water passing through the
channel. This vegetation tends to accumulate in the “fall” site at the end of
the concrete channel during times of heavy rain. Alien Mosquito fish, Cray
fish, Tahitian prawns and Thiarid snails are common animals observed in the
stream.
At this site we notice a slight increase in temperature and pH, a slight
decrease in dissolved oxygen levels and the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is
still close to that of ordinary tap water. |
