Heeia Stream Water Quality Monitoring

Site 1:  The Gauge Station

The Gauge Station is the first of our sampling sites. Close to the Coast Guard Omega Station, it provides “baseline” information on water quality before passing through residential areas.

A natural bottom and natural stream bank area, the Gauge Station is shaded by an extensive tree canopy consisting of native and alien vegetation. The underbrush is minimal, grass is sparse and mosses and ferns grow on the rocks lining the stream bank.

The water here is cool and has a high concentration of dissolved oxygen. pH levels are mildly alkaline, and the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels for this site are similar to that of ordinary tap water.
