Heeia Stream Water Quality Monitoring

Site 2:  Haiku Plantations Bridge

Our second sampling site is located in Haiku Plantations, a gated residential area in Kaneohe. At this site, the streambed and banks are natural. Vegetation in the area is a mixture of native and exotic, landscaped and wild —often reflecting the preferences of the landowner adjacent to the stream. The property owner closest to our sampling site has a small patch of taro growing along the stream bank.

Commonly observed animals at this site are all alien: Tahitian prawns, crayfish, mosquito fish, mollies and swordtails. The parameters measured at this site did not differ significantly from those measured at the Gauge Station. Dissolved oxygen and pH levels decrease slightly, water temperature increases slightly and the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels are similar to those of ordinary tap water.
