Heeia Stream Water Quality Monitoring

Site 7:  The Riparian Clearing

Our seventh site is the cleared riparian area on the makai (seaward) side of the long bridge (see aerial photo below).

The streambed has a natural soft silt bottom. One side of the stream bank is the mangrove-infested wall of Heeia Fishpond while the other side is the area we nicknamed the “Riparian Clearing.” The vegetation in this area is predominantly Mangrove (Rhizopora mangle and Bruguieria sexangula), Koa haole (Leucaena leucocephala), and Indian pluchea (Pluchea indica).

Commonly observed animals in this area include juvenile Aholehole (Kuhlia sandvicensis), juvenile ‘Ama‘Ama (Mugil cephalus), and juvenile ‘O‘opu ‘Akupa (Eleotris sandwicensis).

Water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH increase slightly in this area and the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels decrease slightly. Salinity tends to vary with the tide.
